I never do either. <div><br></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">This past week, while answering some common diabetes questions from a coworker, she said “you’re so tough.” I look at her and just sort of smile. And again she says, “no, seriously. You’re so tough to do that every day. You’ve gotta be.” I smiled and thanked her, telling her I guess I don’t really have a choice. But still, I didn’t take her words to heart. I am not tough in my eyes. She doesn’t know how often I let it get the best of me. I screw up. My blood sugars are a mess sometimes. I don’t always treat my lows/highs right away. I cry in the middle of the night because I just want to sleep. I get frustrated waiting hours on the phone to fight for approval for my lifesaving supplies and medications. I break often. I am not tough. </span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br></span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Or... am I? </span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br></span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">As I looked in the mirror today while getting dressed, I noticed a small blood stain on my t-shirt and as I looked closer I could see hundreds of tiny scars on my belly and back and multiple large bruises on my skin from diabetes devices and that special person’s voice replayed in my mind, “you are so tough.” As I looked at my scarred skin, I thought to myself... you know what? This sucks. Really bad. But, I keep on going. I keep getting up and taking care of myself. I keep battling this disease that likes to throw curve balls. I haven’t given up, ever. I do more in a day to keep myself alive than most people could ever comprehend. Maybe I am tough after all? </span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br></span></div><div>If you’re living with Type 1 Diabetes, it’s just life. You get up, put one foot in front of the other, and do life... with diabetes in tow. You poke yourself every other hour. You silence alarms before anyone else even notices them. You eat glucose tablets so quick, no one knows. You count your carbs without even blinking. You do a pump site change in the corner quicker than most people could send a short text message... because your blood sugar is really high, but you don’t want anyone to know. You go through a full work day on very little sleep. You pursue your dreams though you know how much more difficult your pursuit will be. You fight for yourself to have equal oppurtunity. And you do it all, without even realizing how amazing you are. </div><div><br></div><div>My friends living with T1D, YOU ARE A WARRIOR. People may tell you this often, but I know that you don’t believe it. You don’t see yourself as a superhero. You don’t get why battling diabetes makes you so special. But next time someone tells you how tough you are, look at your fingertips, your scarred arms, your bruised skin, and respond “Thanks, I think I’m pretty darn tough too.” And those of you who know and love someone with T1D, remind us every now and then that you see our strength. We really need it. </div><div><br></div><div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">T1D is a beast... but don’t ever forget to remind it who is in charge. </span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><br></span></div><div><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">-Ashlyn </span></div><div><br></div></div><div><br></div><div><img id="id_bb2d_b194_2ecb_e4d8" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uVRpm0wFrQA/Wxs8QZI2CmI/AAAAAAAAAyg/BbHWCV--3RcthQxIvZ7bdJ6_isjSTB3sQCHMYCw/s5000/%255BUNSET%255D" alt="" title="" tooltip="" style="width: 353px; height: auto;"><br><br><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00919628137357033532noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562924972387584697.post-9978051580972038562017-10-03T14:11:00.003-07:002017-10-03T14:11:36.238-07:00Keeping Diabetes Discrete: Pocket Innerwear Review For those of us living with diabetes, keeping our devices out of the way yet in easy access can be difficult. Dexcom receivers, insulin pumps and even glucose tablets need to be on us at all times and sometimes there just is not enough pockets. That is where Pocket Innerwear comes in! Pocket Innerwear has a goal to simplify life with diabetes by making devices/supplies easy to hide, out of the way, and easily accessible. I came across these products at Children with Diabetes Friends for Life 2017 and they were kind enough to send me some products to review.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZHvPQzi6_Tas9Om3rcoS2tsYtVQ-HGn3KneurbNmVVUOGdr7P625TgNeQZraHyp_Em9pqO2WLjKT76VqPSdvMZwKO0xodLg69VhQ876CwEchcVCDLqc2sBPALZTDiRSeiB6zMH0770g/s1600/pocket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZHvPQzi6_Tas9Om3rcoS2tsYtVQ-HGn3KneurbNmVVUOGdr7P625TgNeQZraHyp_Em9pqO2WLjKT76VqPSdvMZwKO0xodLg69VhQ876CwEchcVCDLqc2sBPALZTDiRSeiB6zMH0770g/s320/pocket.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pictures above are pulled from Pocket Innerwear's website, only because I live alone and could not get photos of myself that did the items justice. The items pictured above are the two I got to try out. The first is the <span style="background-color: white; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #1c1d1d; font-family: Vollkorn, serif;">"Womens Racerback T1D PumpPocket Tank" Insulin Pump TechTank. This is a soft and thin tank with a small pocket on the side and a hole in the back for insulin pump tubing. They sent me this item in a bright pink color and it is PERFECT to wear under a cardigan to my physical therapy internships. I am able to keep my Dexcom receiver on myself without it getting in the way of treating patients like it would in my pants pocket. It washes well and did not shrink. The second item pictured are the "Women's T1D Pump Briefs Size 0-8" Boyshorts with an Insulin Pump Pocket. When I initially saw these, I thought they were so tiny there is no way they will fit me but</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #1c1d1d; font-family: Vollkorn, serif;">don't let them deceive you, they STRETCH so much! They are soft like the tank as well. I love these for wearing under a dress. I can still wear my receiver on me so that I can feel it vibrate and I do not have to have it stuck deep in my purse. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #1c1d1d; font-family: Vollkorn, serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #1c1d1d; font-family: Vollkorn, serif;">All in all, I loved these products! I am currently an OmniPod and Dexcom user who is thinking about switching to T-Slim and though I hate the idea of tubing, I think I could easily adjust to the idea of a different pump with these products to help with the fashion side of things. Pocket Innerwear has tons of items for kids, men, and women, so go check them out! This clothing will seriously change your life if you have T1D. I will put a link below to their website so that you can check them out. </span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: ".sfuitext";">I think we can all agree on one thing, diabetes stinks. But, I have to admit, technology does help make diabetes a little bit easier. Devices like CGMs and pumps help to simplify our daily routines as people living with diabetes. For those of you who are unaware, an insulin pump continuously pumps insulin into a person's body 24/7 via an infusion set inserted under the skin and attached with a sticker. A CGM is a device that constantly monitors a person's blood glucose levels and alerts them if they go out of range. A CGM is also inserted under the skin and attached to the body with a sticker like device. These devices make life easier, but keeping those stickers stuck to the skin can be a pain... that is where Expression Med comes in! </span></div>

Expression Med is a company founded with one idea in mind, to make devices stick in style. These adhesives are light, thin, and excellent for sensitive skin. They are easily applied and will last upwards of a few weeks. With my sensitive skin and bad history of poor skin reactions to adhesives, I was hesitant to try something new, but I am happy to report that Expression Med is a win!</span></div>

I applied the sensor to clean and dry skin with no extra adhesives such as skin tac. The tape is thin, easy to apply, and once it is on the skin it is unnoticeable. I loved how light and breathable it felt on my skin. Now, I was going to be putting it to the test. The week I wore this first adhesive, I was in my 2 week summer break so my plans included lots of time outside. Throughout the week I spent multiple days in the pool and I worked out every night. The adhesive of the Expression Med tape began to only slightly peel on day 4 but it was just a small amount around the edges. By day 7, the adhesive was still stuck good and I could have probably gotten another 4-7 days out of it but my sensor failed. </span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: ".sfuitext";">Now, the true test... did it do well with my sensitive skin? When removing the patch I was expecting red, bumpy, irritated skin that I usually get but, to my surprise, my skin was intact and not broken out! Score! I am so thrilled to have another option for adhesives that do not bother my skin. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: ".sfuitext";">All in all, I was very impressed with Expression Med adhesives. They are light, thin, good for sensitive skin, and long lasting. I've been thinking about writing a post on this subject for a while but for fear of starting a debate, I've put it off. But, I've had enough... I have had enough of being targeted my MLM consultants because I am chronically ill. </div><div><br></div><div>Those of you who don't know, an MLM is a multi-level marketing company (like Avon, Origami Owl, Thirty-One, It Works etc). People can become consultants, designers, whatever they call it, for these companies and sell their product. These people can eventually work their way up the line and increase their pay based upon how much product they sell and how many people sign on to sell under them. One of the many ways MLM consultants market their product is via social media. MLMs are GREAT ways for adults looking to increase their income, stay at home moms, college students, and retirees to make a steady income. I was once an MLM seller, I sold Origami Owl (O2), so I know this from both sides. I LOVED selling O2 and I also loved the extra income I got from it. I say all of this to say, I have nothing wrong with MLMs and what their goal is. Here is where I have a problem... </div><div><br></div><div>As you probably know, I live with Type One Diabetes, an autoimmune condition that is EXHAUSTING and has NO CURE. I'll say that again, it has NO CURE. That being said, here is an example of a message I received from someone who I do not even know. </div><div><br></div><div>"<i>Hi Ashlyn! I saw a friend share a post about your diabetes and wanted to share something with you that could help you come off of medication. I sell (insert product name here) and it has proven to help people better manage their diabetes, lower their blood glucose levels, and come off of medications. Let me know if you would like to give this a try." </i></div><div><i><br></i></div><div>Here is where my blood begins to boil. As I said before, Type One Diabetes has NO cure. I am insulin dependent, for life, end of story. No special pill, special drink, or essential oils will give me the ability to come off of insulin. So, when I receive messages offering a "cure", I have a hard time being kind in my response. Usually I try my hardest to kindly educate the person on T1D, tell them that currently I am doing well and managing well, and I always say that I will research whatever it is that they sell to see if it will be of any benefit to me. I give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they just don't understand that my type of diabetes cannot be reversed and that insulin is really the only treatment. But, here is where they step over the line.... </div><div><br></div><div>The person quoted above decided to argue with me about diabetes and how it can be managed with their product. I received messages almost daily until I finally had to block this person. There are others who have accepted that their product wasn't a cure, but still insisted that it would help me.... they are assuming I need help managing my diabetes, yet they haven't spent a second in my shoes and when I tell them I am managing just fine, they continue to insist that I "need" their help. </div><div><br></div><div>The messages offering a cure are what make me most angry. I have many, many well meaning friends who message me to tell me about the product they sell, let me know it may help diabetes, and leave it at that. When I tell them I will research it and tell them I am doing well on my current treatment protocol, they wish me well, don't argue, and still love me the same, even if I don't buy their product. To those friends, thank you. Thank you for understanding and respecting my choices and thank you for taking the time to let me educate you on what T1D really is. </div><div><br></div><div>Here is what it boils down to, I am not a walking diabetes disaster. I do not have a sign on me that says "Help me with my diabetes", and I do not appreciate being a target. I get messages at least twice a week from people selling a number of different products all because they know I'm diabetic. I feel like I've got a big target on my back and that people think I'll be an easy person to make money off of. </div><div><br></div><div>I have to end by saying, I appreciate what all of you MLM consultants do. You're selling a product that has helped you and that you believe in to help have better income for yourself and your families. Many of you (and you know who you are), mean well when you contact me. You are genuinely concerned and want to offer help to me and if I'm not interested, you don't mind... and to those people, I say thank you. Just keep one thing in mind, if someone says they aren't interested. That means they aren't interested today and probably won't be tomorrow, next week, or next month either. Don't harass someone who isn't interested. Those of us living with diseases like T1D have enough stress as it is. I poke my fingers 10 times a day, dose insulin 6-8 times per day, count every carb I eat, and lose a lot of sleep... that alone is enough stress. We fight hard every day to keep ourselves alive. </div><div><br></div><div>Keep selling whatever it is that you sell, keep providing for your families, and even keep posting your stories and testimonies on Facebook... just be sensitive when it comes to those of us who live with chronic illness. We don't mind your concern but we do mind your daily, never ending persistence to get us to "buy in". Trust me, the day there really is a cure, I'll be buying into it. </div><div><br></div><div>-Ashlyn </div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jcyXPRWvPY0/WW1ltSJmDXI/AAAAAAAAAlg/s6wSSzyNE1YEPCGvYxy_7p29KTde9XhFgCHMYCw/I/photo_415286.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><br><br> <br></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00919628137357033532noreply@blogger.com28tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562924972387584697.post-12102609552092163422017-07-11T17:14:00.000-07:002017-07-11T18:06:26.974-07:00CWD FFL 2017: The Week I Love Diabetes One week out of the year, I LOVE diabetes. This sounds crazy, right? Who could ever love diabetes? Well, anyone who has ever attended the Children With Diabetes Friends for Life international conference will tell you that it is the one week out of the year that a sense of normalcy exists for those of us living with T1D. Last week I attended my second conference and when I tell you it just keeps getting better, I'm not lying. <div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mQ6C0atkcJ0/WWVzdLiSYaI/AAAAAAAAAkk/F1P56HbhXGMrWpptYqQH7kaJqwFkUUKIgCHMYCw/I/photo_615020.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div></div><div>July 5- Departure Day!</div><div>Everyone has already arrived and registered, I just had to show up to the party a little bit late. Due to school being my first priority, I was only able to afford to take one day off of class. July 5, after sitting through a lecture, a lab, a practical exam, and a written exam, I was finally on my way to Orlando to join my friends at Coronado Springs. All day, my phone was blowing up with two of my best friends for life, Morgan and Michelle, texting and calling me to get constant updates on my location. We could not WAIT to see each other. I arrived very late and as I was getting out of the car, Morgan came out of no where and attacked me with hugs. We didn't want to let go. We've been speaking via FaceTime for a whole year now, it felt surreal to be able to hug again. I made it just-in-time for the Crystal Bowersox concert and I got to reunite with Michelle and I got to meet Gretchen, who by the end of the week would also become one of my best friends. Morgan was rooming with us, and that first night we didn't get in bed till around 1 am because we couldn't stop talking and laughing. I now had on my green bracelet (for those with Diabetes) and mom had her orange one (for those who love someone with Diabetes) we were ready to tackle the week. </div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NuhAWdSqK7I/WWVzdb99w8I/AAAAAAAAAko/ueDCIyFqqG825CpTxhW2NaAQQ0Qnjl4eQCHMYCw/I/photo_787053.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bw-bc9TCl6Y/WWVzdrF5vUI/AAAAAAAAAks/qrv2EvtpKXYQbsI80oCOPXokZac01ax4ACHMYCw/I/photo_607877.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div></div><div>July 6- Let the sessions begin! </div><div>Today began with a huge breakfast buffet and The Richard Rubin Opening Keynote: Diabetes at 212° by Dr Desmond Schatz. This keynote was amazing, upsetting, thought provoking, and interesting all rolled into one and it got us all pumped up for the next few days ahead. On this day, I attended the Sugar Surfing workshop with Dr Stephan Ponder. This is a session I was very excited about. I have read Dr Ponder's book twice and he has literally been instrumental in keeping me healthy with T1D. I enjoyed listening to Dr Ponder expand on the diabetes management tips outlined in his book and getting to talk with him personally about my journey and how much he has helped me. Mom got to attend sessions about the cost of insulin and advocacy. </div><div>Much of today was also spent exploring the exhibit hall and reuniting with other FFLs from last year like the Fickling family, Logan and Samantha Merwin, the Paul family, the list goes on... And of course with the exhibit hall comes lots of free stuff and lots of time spent at the Pump Peelz stand with my friends Scott and Emily, picking out new swag for my devices. </div><div>Next came the scary part of the trip... retinal screening. As you probably know, eye problems can be a serious complication of diabetes. CWD so generously provides all people with T1D a retinal screening to assess the eyes and how healthy they are. Thankfully, aside from some sun damage, my eyes are perfect. </div><div>The day ended with the banquet, where we got to hear RaeLynn perform, eat amazing food, watch amazing people accept this year's awards, and watch DocuDiabetes III. Here is where my 5 seconds of fame comes in... my video I made for PTA school (about diabetes) was chosen as a top 5 for DocuDiabetes.</div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DlHFFT_TOnk/WWVzeCLRIJI/AAAAAAAAAkw/93pRDXcmhx07kHv5BpNAGnI4EP_05zZTQCHMYCw/I/photo_841279.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8sI1U2GGC7g/WWVzefTe4oI/AAAAAAAAAk0/hJ-WU0ZmyHkEs26fq_EMokerf4opEOgvACHMYCw/I/photo_891107.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div></div><div>July 7- Adulting sessions galore... </div><div>Today's sessions on my agenda were all about being an adult with T1D and entering the world of "adulting". I learned all about insurance and my rights as a person with Type 1 Diabetes. I got to hear one of my fave FFLs Leigh speak and she always teaches me so so much about how to navigate college and the workforce as a person with T1D. I also attended a session about the flaws in the hemoglobin A1C test and though mom and Morgan were utterly bored, the health sciences student in me thought it was super interesting. </div><div>Tonight was all about adults and young adults. I attended the young adults dinner with lots of people my age and we went to the Tandem adults night where they had food, karaoke, drinks, and games. </div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TP0CSDRJGTI/WWVzeiV2XnI/AAAAAAAAAk4/qwTbHSZpsj0KipsBaBTNz0M2rw7_qtoCACHMYCw/I/photo_242231.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FXdxWWRxzVY/WWVzepd9UAI/AAAAAAAAAk8/t3ejQe91QUoAZXubYEAnAIv2YkmkWR9fACHMYCw/I/photo_28605.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div></div><div>July 8- DISNEY DAY! </div><div>Mom, Gretchen, Morgan, and I all decided to go to Animal Kingdom for the day and we had a blast. There is something pretty neat about sitting down on a curb at Disney and all sharing glucose tabs to treat low blood sugar... makes low blood sugar feel a little more "normal". We enjoyed seeing the new World of Pandora too! </div><div>Now came the hard part... goodbyes started. Morgan was leaving at 4 am, so we spent our evening at the Family Night and running around the hotel so she could say her goodbyes. But, as sad as goodbyes are, this was one of my favorite nights. Gretchen came to our room for a couple of hours and we sat on the bed and laughed, cried, and shared stories. It is SO NICE to be able to talk openly about diabetes and it's struggles with people who actually care and "get it". I was not ready to leave this safety net. </div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9k-eh4uLCDw/WWVzez529aI/AAAAAAAAAlA/dEKk5X2sdXc21Ciwu2xOb5osc7W5A_8oQCHMYCw/I/photo_751649.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1jOgLNUtubI/WWVzfM3T6BI/AAAAAAAAAlE/HWCqfAbl1vgpeBYW39NXVkqiC0YQ2RuYgCHMYCw/I/photo_71010.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div></div><div>July 9- Farewell FFL </div><div>Today is the day we dread. Saying goodbye. I cried a good bit of the morning hugging all of my people and saying "see ya next year". We all were getting ready to head back home and home for us is all over the country. Ohio, Canada, California, Florida, North Carolina. This part stinks. </div><div>We enjoyed an amazing breakfast with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto and we shared some final memories. FFL 2017 was officially over. </div><div><br></div><div>As you can tell by my long winded post, FFL was once again more than I could have ever asked for. Once again, I felt so normal for a week. I was surrounded by green and orange bracelets. Someone always had insulin if needed. Someone always had test strips. Someone always had glucose tabs. Someone always had a shoulder to cry on. And EVERYONE genuinely cared about the battle we are all fighting against this devastating disease. </div><div>Thank you CWD for making this possible. </div><div>My green bracelet is off. My ID badge is hung up. My program book is on the shelf... but the memories are close in my heart and my FFLs are just a FaceTime call away. </div><div>Let the countdown to next year begin. </div><div><br></div><div>-Ashlyn</div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-F6O28qnqoMM/WWVzfZqggUI/AAAAAAAAAlI/fIEW5U65PAgARpWFT07iEjXqcch1I2DUgCHMYCw/I/photo_872713.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><br>Oh and PS- Thanks to my amazing instructors Kelli and Melinda for allowing me to take a day off of school and rearranging your schedules for me to test early so that I could have this amazing experience. Before I get into the meat of this issue, I want you to imagine something... <div>You are 19 years old and a sophomore in college with your whole life ahead of you. Suddenly, you begin feeling ill. You are thirsty all of the time, you feel lethargic and can barely make it through 5 hours of classes without a nap in your car, something is not right and you know it. You finally go to the doctor after you've lost 10 pounds and the doctor tells you that you have Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). The doctor tells you that T1D is an autoimmune condition that has no cure and teaches you what you must do to keep yourself alive. After learning about carb counting, insulin injections, blood sugar testing, and life threatening high and low blood sugar, you're sent to the pharmacy to pick up your life saving tools. </div><div>For the next 3 months supply, you are given 900 blood glucose test strips, 900 lancets, a blood glucose meter, 6 insulin pens, 50 ketone test strips, and 540 needles to use for insulin injections. All of these supplies would have been upwards of $5,000 without good insurance coverage and even with insurance, your first trip to the pharmacy cost you $400. </div><div><br></div><div><div><font face="-webkit-standard"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Now that I've painted a picture for you, let me put a face to this story. This is me, Ashlyn, and this is what a pre-existing condition looks like. The story above is my story. </span></font></div><div></div></div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I2gywLHTKLI/WQxrF5tILAI/AAAAAAAAAig/4XJJbPi-LZowZb9qhGnjpDkC9iXB1EW3wCHM/I/photo_545609.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><br>As you probably know, yesterday the House of Representatives made the decision to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama Care. Obama Care has been a major topic of debate for Americans over recent years. With the ACA, many American's saw their insurance premiums skyrocket, which made the Affordable Care Act not so affordable. With the ACA did come some positives such as protection for those with pre-existing conditions and the ability for an adult under the age of 27 to stay on their parents' health insurance. At the beginning of his campaign, President Trump began pushing the issue of the ACA and saying that should he be elected, it would be one of the first things on his agenda. President Trump also insured that with this repeal, he would protect those with pre-existing conditions. Yesterday, however, the House voted against protecting those with pre-existing conditions. If you aren't someone with a pre-existing condition or don't have a child with one, you probably dont understand how serious this is. Let me tell you what this could do to people like me. </div><div>Insurance companies will be able to decide if they want to cover me or not. I will have to search high and low for an insurance company who will cover me and when I finally find one, they will charge me 3x what they charge the average patient because they know I will be a guaranteed expense. I will then be paying $3000+ per month just for insurance premiums, which will make many of my daily meds and technologies unaffordable. I may have to limit how many test strips I can afford, which will then limit how many times per day I can test my blood sugar. The less I am able to test my blood sugar, the greater my risk for life threatening high and low blood sugars and long-term complications due to poorly managed diabetes. Meanwhile, some celebrate because they got a tax cut. But those who celebrate don't know that their tax cut could kill me or the other millions of American's like me living with a pre-existing condition. Would YOU kill ME for a tax-cut? </div><div>It all boils down to this, republican or democrat, it is important for you to understand how much this decision could impact me if the senate votes yes in the next few weeks. PLEASE, do your research and contact your senator to let them know that this is NOT okay. I am actually registered republican, but that does not mean I have to stand for this and neither do you. While I believe some MAJOR changes need to be made with our current healthcare system (the ACA) in the US, I do not believe that changes need to be made at the expense of people who have no control of the cards they were dealt. Life with diseases like T1D is hard enough as it is, please don't make it any harder on us. </div><div><br></div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OL-c-g_tw6A/WQxrGRL1t3I/AAAAAAAAAik/gSpUfNBMBZEQV-SQnWGHtSOKfex3S4-YACHM/I/photo_490559.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div>Please contact your senator, my life depends on it. </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>-Ashlyn <br> <br></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00919628137357033532noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562924972387584697.post-10231291168852559492017-01-04T17:08:00.000-08:002017-01-04T17:40:47.726-08:00Tethered and Uncomfortable or Tubeless and Miserable: Decisions and Diabetes Well, long time... no blog. I could make up a ton of excuses as to why I've let my writing slip by the wayside, but to sum it up... life has been hectic. In August, I moved to PCB and I began the Physical Therapist Assistant program (see my last blog). But, that's not why I am here, this blog is all about life with T1D... so here goes the most recent saga. <div>Diabetes wise, I've had a pretty tough time lately. As I've talked about before, I began using the OmniPod insulin management system in April 2016 and I was absolutely loving it, but, things have changed. When I moved out on my own and began school, I began having a lot of issues with random high blood glucose numbers, skin reactions, and pod failures. I began to get so frustrated with the system that had helped me for so many months and I wondered why my body was suddenly rejecting it. </div><div>So, I began looking into my other options. I decided that I wanted to move forward and try to get the T slim insulin pump, an insulin pump that has tubing but is the most advanced pump technology wise. The only roadblock, insurance. Insurance companies only allow people with diabetes to get a new insulin pump every four years, I have only had my current pump for about eight months. So, we submitted a letter of medical necessity and photos of my blistered skin with the request for a new pump… Insurance denied it. I was devastated. In the midst of waiting to hear from insurance, I got a severely infected pump site that spread to all of the open areas on my skin from reactions to the pump. I spent 2 weeks receiving antibiotic injections and extremely strong oral antibiotics. I was beyond frustrated and ready to rip the pods off and go back to doing MDI (multiple daily injections). What do I do now? Insurance obviously believes that it is not medically necessary for me to have a new pump, so what now? My doctor did a peer to peer with the insurance company, and they still denied. Next step was an appeal... an appeal for this pump that I desperatly wanted and felt like I needed. This is where things get interesting... </div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6FyALBhovnk/WG2kHeU8r1I/AAAAAAAAAfI/gHco-1sp940/I/photo_642395.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><div><font size="2">The beginning of my infection saga... </font></div> <br></div><div>Thanks to some wonderful people, I was able to get a T slim pump to trial temporarily. This would help me decide if I wanted to go forward with fighting insurance (which is often fighting a losing battle). I got the pump put on and I was so excited for no failures, no rash, no occlusions. The excitement was short lived. After 24 hours attached to a pump with tubing for the first time, I was aggravated and I felt defeated. Frankly, I hated being attached to something and I hated feeling like I had to worry about this device. Is it going to fall out of my pocket? Am I going to accidentally hit buttons and give myself a lethal dose of insulin? (Yes, I know, safety features... but these were my thoughts after being on a tubeless pump for so long). And then, I ripped my site out on a door knob. I was done with diabetes, done with pumps, just... done. I kept thinking about how ridiculous it is that I'm having to make these decisions. I kept wondering why we do not have a cure with all of the technology and brilliant minds available. I kept wondering what I was going to do next in my diabetes management. So, through the holidays, I put my OmniPod back on and thought on it... </div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ONGcNp3Tsaw/WG2kHg0z0hI/AAAAAAAAAfM/qbsv7sEqDks/I/photo_617388.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div><font size="2">My first day "tethered"</font><br></div><div>A few days ago, I decided to give the T slim another chance… I have a little bit more time to decide if we want to appeal the insurance company's decision, so I figured I needed to get the pump another chance before I totally ditch the idea. I have went into it with a better attitude this time and I've kept the pump attached for almost a week. So far, I am very pleased with my blood sugars, I am pleased with no pump failures, and I am loving how easy the T slim is to use. But, I cannot get over having something attached to my waist and having tubing hanging everywhere. Getting dressed in the morning is a hassle and I always forget to pull the stinking thing off when I go to use the restroom… So, what now? I don't know what is next, but I just had to write this to get it all off my chest… For those of you who do not live with type one diabetes or do not have a child living with it, this is life. It is frustrating, it is relentless, and it never gives me a break. I have to make decisions that no 21-year-old should have to make and sometimes these decisions are life altering or life-threatening. For those of my T1D, pumping friends out there I hope you can give me some words of advice or encouragement with this situation. I have about a month to decide what I'm going to do, so I will be doing a lot of researching and praying. Until I make his decision, I will keep on fighting this monster T1D and keep on enjoying school and life. I refuse to let T1D determine my quality of life. </div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00919628137357033532noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5562924972387584697.post-4832692492467062212016-09-07T15:18:00.000-07:002016-09-07T15:24:09.009-07:00Moving Out: Life Change with T1D<div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">Well, after a few weeks off from blogging… I am finally back. Most all of my friends and family know that almost a month ago, I packed up and moved to Panama City Beach all on my own (well with Nala, of course). Moving out is something that I was scared to do because my family and I are very close, and I didn't want to be that far away. But, I am doing what I have to do to get the degree and licensure that I need to work in the field of my dreams. So… Since this blog is all about diabetes, what does moving out have to do with diabetes? Well, for those of you who do not understand T1D very well, life change causes diabetes to change and living alone with such a fragile disease is pretty scary. Here is my experience so far…</div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;"><br></div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">First of all, just the idea of going to sleep at night knowing that I am alone was enough to make me scared to go to sleep. Let's be real, low blood sugar in the middle of the night is a common killer of type one diabetics and this is something we all know but we try to forget. My first few nights alone, I had to learn to rely on technology to keep me alive and, I had myself setting alarms to wake up and test my blood sugar multiple times throughout the night just to make sure that I was OK. I think that nighttime was one of my biggest fears in living alone with diabetes. Obviously, I have done just fine and I'm no longer waking up multiple times to test my blood sugar in the middle of the night.</div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;"><br></div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">Something else that has taken some time to adjust to, living alone with diabetes, has been not having someone to come home and complain too. That sounds bad, but when I've had a bad diabetes day I always used to come home and show my mom my Dexcom graph or just cry about how bad the day had been. Obviously living alone I am… alone, but not having someone here to help me through my bad diabetes days made me feel even more alone. Yes, my mom and many of my "diabesties" are just a phone call away, but it's just not the same. I began to realize just how invisible diabetes is when I was surrounded by people who do not know I have it and do not understand the struggles. It's easy to put on a strong face and pretend that everything is okay, but anyone with chronic illness knows that sometimes, you've just gotta cry. </div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;"><br></div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">Something I always knew about diabetes but never really understood to the fullest extent was how much stress affects blood sugars and insulin needs. I have only had diabetes for 11 months and in those 11 months I have dealt with plenty of stress, but, the stress of moving out, living alone, and starting a very difficult program in school was enough to make my diabetes whack. My first week of school, I dealt with crazy high and low blood sugars. Sometimes I felt like the insulin I was getting was straight water and other times I felt like my insulin was 10 times stronger than it should be… My Dexcom graph looked like a roller coaster and that is just not something I'm used to. I have made more adjustments to my pump settings in the past month than I have since starting the insulin pump but, I think I finally have things where they need to be and I think my nerves are calming down a bit.</div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;"><br></div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">But, don't let this sound like it's all negative and that I am doing horribly living along with diabetes… Because that is far from the truth. In the past month, I have learned so much about myself, my body, and my diabetes. I think living alone is something that every type one diabetic should have the chance to do because it forces you to problem solve on your own and to figure out what you need to do to make it through each day. Mom is not here to come back to my room and sit with me while I treat a scary low blood sugar in the middle of the night, no one is here to help me insert a new site in an awkward spot, no one is here to help me do the math and make pump setting changes, I am left to my own devices and I am forced to make decisions on my own. </div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;"><br></div><div style="color: rgb(69, 69, 69); font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 17px; text-decoration: -webkit-letterpress;">I am still a diabadass and I am still beating diabetes every single day. I am having a blast in school, I am learning a lot, and diabetes is just along for the ride. I am trying my hardest to not neglect my health but I am also trying to remind myself that on this journey, I cannot let diabetes consume me. I am enjoying school and being a student PTA and I have the BEST classmates a girl could ask for. I cannot wait to see where the next 2 years takes me! </div><div><div><br></div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sUr1N70j7oY/V9CTO1F9uoI/AAAAAAAAAbI/lELgAdQtQ40/I/photo_250649.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div></div>Two weeks ago... </div><div><div><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3mdJBC7wbU4/V9CTPDl4OyI/AAAAAAAAAbM/pRSM_NEkqBM/I/photo_287523.jpg" border="0" class="bloggoimg"></div>This week... If you have T1D or are the parent of a T1D, you know that between test strips, alcohol wipes, smarties wrappers, empty juice boxes, used needles, and blood, our diabetes bags tend to be a complete mess. One of my worst diabetes habits is the way that I handle my bloody fingers. This is going to sound nasty to my non T1D readers, but my T1D readers will totally understand. Here are a few ways I tend to handle my bloody fingers after testing my blood sugar: wiping it on my diabetes bag/meter case, wiping it on my clothes, licking my finger (*cringe*), or just rubbing my fingers together and leaving blood stained fingers. Could I use alcohol swabs? Absolutely. But, those little things are all wrapped up in a package and have to be opened, leaving a little extra trash to find a place for. Alcohol swabs also tend to dry out my skin. In 9 months of living with T1D, I have developed some pretty bad habits, but I am working to break those habits with a product I have found, <a href="http://www.diabeticdabs.com/">Diabetic Dabs</a>.<br />

Diabetic Dabs are a product dreamed up and created by Liz Sacco, mom to David who was diagnosed with T1D in 2011. Liz, like most of us, was trying to find a way to clean fingers better after blood glucose testing and thus she developed Diabetic Dabs. You can read more of her story <a href="http://www.diabeticdabs.com/the_story">here</a>. Liz was kind enough to send me some of her product to test out and review, here are my thoughts on it.<br />
<br />
Diabetic Dabs come in a package as pictured and there are 4 sets of Dabs in each pack. The Dabs I received are square but they also come in a heart shaped option. Each sheet has an optional adhesive on the back so that they can be stuck to a meter case. I chose not to use the adhesive because I keep my meter and supplies in a small makeup bag. Each dab is thin, alcohol swab sized, and soft.<br />
<br />
Initially, I did not realize it is recommended to remove each individual sheet from the bunch before using and I wasted a few dabs because my blood soaked through. Another issue I ran into initially was breaking my bad habit. I would pull a Dab out before testing but I would always forget and lick my finger instead. Once I made it habit to use the Dabs and use them correctly, I was able to really see how well they worked.<br />
<br />
First, these little things are SO soft! Alcohol swabs are great, but they tend to dry the skin on my fingers out whereas dabs are soft and dry so this is not an issue. Next, they are very small and create very little trash. They are also easy to tear off from the bunch, which makes them easy to access. Another plus is that a portion of every sale is donated to diabetes research. Finally, the most important part and my reason for trying these, they have created much better habits for me when testing. I found in my few weeks of using this product that my clothes were no longer blood stained, my new diabetes bag had zero stains, and I was no longer licking my fingers to get them clean.<br />
<br />
All in all, I think Diabetic Dabs are a great product. If you are willing to make the change and create new habits, this is a great product to try. You can put the alcohol swabs away and quit licking your bloody fingers. Thank you Liz for sending me your product to try, I will definitely be ordering more in the near future!<br />

Whether it is a unique laugh or a quirky personality, we try to love the things that make us unique and make us who we are. But, what if what makes you different is difficult to embrace? What if most of those around you think your differences are weird? This is what it is like to be diagnosed with a chronic illness like T1D. Suddenly, you are different and you did not ask to be. Suddenly. NO ONE understands you, no matter how hard you try to explain yourself. Suddenly, those who love you the most are at a loss and do not know how to make you feel better. Suddenly, though you are still you, you are not you anymore. Suddenly, you are alone, or so you think. I was alone.... until Friends for Life.<br />
<br />
October 26, 2015, my diagnosis day, I took to the DOC (Diabetes Online Community) for support. Upon looking up hashtags on Instagram and joining many Facebook groups, I was able to realize that there are many people out there who are walking the same walk that I am. I am SO thankful that I became part of the DOC because I made many online friends and connected with my local JDRF chapter. But, something was still missing. I still had yet to spend any time with anyone else living with T1D and even though I was part of online groups of thousands of PWD (people with diabetes), I still felt alone.<br />
<br />
In one of the many Facebook groups I have joined, I came across a thread about an event called Friends for Life and everyone seemed beyond excited to attend. I decided to Google this event and to my surprise, it was very close to home in Orlando, FL. I applied for a scholarship through the Diabetes Scholars Foundation and was blessed to be awarded a scholarship to attend. Let the planning begin.... I had NO CLUE what I was in for.<br />
<br />

Upon arriving to Orlando World Center Marriott, I was greeted with open arms. We went right over to registration where I was given a green bracelet and my mom was given an orange bracelet. Those who live with T1D wore green and those who love someone with T1D wore an orange bracelet. As soon as I was outfitted with my green bracelet, I felt like I was part of some sort of club and it was so exciting to see others wearing a green bracelet. The first thing on my agenda after registration was to find Morgan. I met Morgan online about a month before the conference and little did I know she would become one of my best friends in just a few short days. Once Morgan and I met in person, we were practically inseparable the entire week, it was a match made in heaven.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Along with Morgan, I made many other friends during the week as well. I met Michelle, who I had followed on Instagram for a while. Michelle and I both live with multiple complex illnesses aside from T1D, so it was SO nice to spend some time with each other. I also met Danielle and Emma who are both around my age as well. The DOC is fairly large and I get friend requests daily from people all over the country who either have T1D or have a child with T1D. I met so many of my Facebook friends during FFL! We attended a young adults dinner and it was so neat to be in a room full of people my age living with T1D.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Friends for Life is largely about making new friends and connections but, there is MUCH more to gain from this experience as well. One of my favorite parts of the week was the exhibit hall. The exhibit hall was full of different vendors. I got to take a look at different products like <a href="https://pumppeelz.com/">Pump Peelz</a>, <a href="http://glucolift.com/">GlucoLift</a>, and <a href="https://spibelt.com/">SpiBelt</a>. I got the opportunity to speak to the people behind organizations like <a href="https://beyondtype1.org/">Beyond Type 1</a>, <a href="http://diabetesscholars.org/college.html">The Diabetes Scholars Foundation</a>, and The Diabetes Research Institute. There were also vendors set up for many different devices such as pumps, meters, and CGMs, available to people living with T1D. My favorite part of the exhibit hall was getting to put my hands on the <a href="http://www.betabionics.org/">iLet Bionic Pancreas</a> and speak to the brilliant minds behind it. This technology seems very promising and will hopefully take away some of the burden of living with this disease. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Another thing FFL offers is educational and support sessions. I attended sessions on seeking accommodations in college, having a career in healthcare, managing sick days, dealing with burnout, dealing with complications, and so much more. My mom had the opportunity to attend sessions on positive caregiving and sending a diabetic child off to college. During these sessions I also got to meet some people who have done things like drive a race car, compete in American Ninja Warrior, and make it to the top on the Voice and American Idol, reminding me that there is nothing that I cannot do. There is so much value in these sessions, especially for someone who is newly diagnosed. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Oh, and I also should add that ALL of the food is carb counted.... that in itself is magical.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
All in all, FFL was the most amazing experience ever. For the first time in 9 months, I felt "normal". For a week I did not have to explain myself, I did not have to deal with stares, and I did not have to feel like a weirdo. For a week I could laugh about a high blood sugar instead of cry, I could test my blood sugar and have others right beside me doing the same thing, I could wear my devices proudly and have a whole group with me doing the same thing, and for a week, I could just be me. Thank you Diabetes Scholars Foundation for this opportunity and thank you Children with Diabetes for making such a difference.</div>

Prior to starting OmniPod, I was doing multiple daily injections (MDI) and in my 6 months since diagnosis, I had taken approximately <span style="font-size: large; font-weight: bold;">1080 </span>injections. I am not scared of shots (thank goodness) and doing injections did not bother me too bad, but I was ready for a change and something a bit more convenient. For those of you who do not quite understand T1D, here is a little summary on how my day went on MDI as compared to my days on the insulin pump.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>MDI</b></span><br />
<b>Before every meal and snack</b>: I would test my blood sugar, count carbs for the meal or snack, calculate the amount of insulin needed to correct my blood sugar (if it was over 140), calculate how much insulin I needed to cover my carbs, add these numbers together, and take the closest amount of insulin to this number as possible. Problem was, on injections the smallest increment I could dose in is .5 unit, so many times I could not take the exact amount of insulin I needed.<br />
<b>2 hours post meal</b>: I needed to test my blood sugar, if above 180 (which happened often on MDI), correct with another injection, if below 100 (which also happened often on MDI) correct with more carbs and test 15 minutes later.<br />
<b>Before driving or exercising: </b>I would always test my blood sugar, if below 120, correct with carbs and wait 15 minutes to leave or start exercising.<br />
<b>Before bed: </b>I had to inject the dreaded long acting insulin Lantus (it BURNS so bad). Lantus was the long acting insulin I took to help keep my blood sugar steady all night long and between meals. Also before bed I would check my blood sugar, correct if high (over 180) or eat if low (below 120 was "low" before bed on MDI).<br />
<b>Middle of the night:</b> On MDI, I had such anxiety about going low in my sleep and not waking up (even with a CGM, its not always accurate). I almost always set an alarm at 2 am to wake up and test.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>OMNIPOD</b></span><br />
<b>Before every meal or snack: </b>The PDM (remote control for my pump) is programmed with settings tailored specifically to my needs. Before eating now, I test my blood sugar, count my carbs, and the PDM does the rest. I tell the PDM what I am eating and it will calculate how much insulin I need based on my blood sugar and carb counting. I press a few buttons, and it administers the insulin. It calculates down to the .05 unit so I am MUCH more accurate in my dosing. I can also get seconds and just dose for more if I want more food, on MDI this would require another injection.<br />
<b>2 hours post meal: </b>I still test my blood sugar 2 hours after eating but now if I am slightly high after a meal, the PDM will calculate how much insulin I need for that and administer it. My blood sugars are MUCH better on the insulin pump.<br />
<b>Before driving or exercising: </b>I usually prefer to be above 100 now so if I test and I am hovering close to 100 or dipping low, I will simply eat a small snack and set a lower temporary basal (steady drip of insulin I get 24/7).<br />
<b>Before bed: </b>NO MORE LANTUS! I simply test my blood sugar and eat a small snack if I need to.<br />
<b>Middle of the night: </b>I actually try to sleep through the night most nights now! The pump is programmed for me and I have told it what times of the day I am higher and need more basal insulin and what times of the day I am lower and need less. I have my pump set to administer slightly more insulin from 10PM-12AM and slightly less insulin from 12AM-6AM. This prevents middle of the night highs, followed by a correction, followed by a low at 2am, which was usually my pattern on MDI.<br />
<br />
All in all, its easy to tell that pumping with OmniPod does make my life a little bit easier. BUT, it is important to read my summaries above and understand that the pump is NOT a cure. I still test my blood sugar 10-12 times per day, I still count my carbs, I still have highs, and I still have lows. The pump just helps make my life with diabetes a little less complicated and a little bit easier. Here are some pros and cons I have found while using an insulin pump and more particularly, the OmniPod.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Pros:</b></span><br />
1.<b> LESS pokes!</b> Obviously, on MDI, I poked myself all day. I took about 6 injections per day and tested my blood sugar 10-12 times a day, so that is 16-18 pokes per day. With the OmniPod, I only have to change my site every 2-3 days so that eliminates shots and just leaves finger pricks.<br />
2.<b> Better accuracy in dosing.</b> I am super sensitive to insulin and take very small amounts. On MDI, I sometimes had to skip injection for a meal because it was not enough carbs for what .5 unit would cover but then I would go HIGH with no insulin to cover my meal. With the OmniPod, I can dose for 1 single carb if I want to, it is that precise.<br />
3.<b> Temporary basal settings. </b>On MDI, I injected my basal at 10pm every night and it was done, I could not make the basal stop working if I was going low or make it work more if I was going high. With the pump, it eliminates the need for 2 separate formulas of insulin and only gives fast acting. If I am running low or getting ready to be in a situation where I always drop (exercise, heat, swimming), I can set a temporary basal so my pump will give me less basal insulin. If I am having a high day, I can simply set a temporary basal for more hourly insulin until I come back down into range.<br />
4. <b>Easier mealtimes.</b> There was soooo much math involved in MDI. I had to always have a calculator and a notepad any time I ate so that I could write everything down and do the adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division. The pump takes over the math for me, now all I have to do at meals is count my carbs, test, and tell the pump. Its also nice not to have to pull out an insulin pen and needles or a syringe and a vial to draw up my insulin before eating.<br />
5. <b>Freedom. </b>This is more directed towards the OmniPod in general as compared to tubed pumps but the OmniPod gives me SO much freedom. Choosing a tubeless pump was the best decision I could have made and I love not having to ever disconnect from the pump because it is stuck to me and it is totally waterproof. I have the freedom to wear what I want and not worry about where I will put my pump and tubing.<br />
6. <b>Easy site changes.</b> Before I started pumping, I watched countless videos of people changing their sites for every pump imaginable. Most videos for tubed pump site changes took about 10-15 minutes. I can change my site in about a minute and 30 seconds of that is the pod priming itself.<br />
7. <b>Pod decorating. </b>Okay, this is another OmniPod specific pro but I love decorating my pods! Below is a picture of all of my pods from the past 4 months. It makes diabetes SO much more fun!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig1NfzJRr1kzH9W7vdVXui0EMS0KEAhVhou51ankqtDwX_sXT2YKHH4cTxVtAoAcNLG3INEk_MRX9wICIfrA3cZ4ERWNS6xtCg-5768n5EtOw2IyHgdTQtabkHqrDWsoH_-j4SUpEUWg/s1600/OmniPod1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig1NfzJRr1kzH9W7vdVXui0EMS0KEAhVhou51ankqtDwX_sXT2YKHH4cTxVtAoAcNLG3INEk_MRX9wICIfrA3cZ4ERWNS6xtCg-5768n5EtOw2IyHgdTQtabkHqrDWsoH_-j4SUpEUWg/s320/OmniPod1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Cons: </b></span><br />
1. <b>Another attachment. </b>I was not too excited about having something else attached to me. I already wear a Dexcom CGM so having something else attached, took some getting used to.<br />
2. <b>Pod failures. </b>This is a PAIN. When a pod fails, it makes an obnoxious noise and wont stop until you tell it to. But, a pro of this compared to other pumps is that it will usually alarm before my blood sugar is sky high. I would rather find out the pod failed by an alarm than by a high BG, feeling yucky, and ketones.<br />
3. <b>Large PDM. </b>The PDM is MUCH larger than the meter I used on MDI and it takes up much more space in my bag.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
So, as you can tell, I obviously do not have too many dislikes for the OmniPod, it has truly made my life so much easier and I am pleased with my decision to go with this pump. If you are considering getting an insulin pump or replacing yours with a new brand, I highly recommend trying a demo kit from OmniPod. They will send you a demo pod to wear for 3 days and you can see how you like it. OmniPod customer service is the best! Once I contacted OmniPod and let them know I was ready to get started, they took it from there. My local rep, Inna, went to my doctor and got all of the appropriate paperwork signed. Within 3 weeks of contacting Inna, I had the OmniPod and I was sitting in training. I love being a "podder" and I would not have it any other way!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When I was diagnosed with type one diabetes, I was taught
all about carb counting, insulin dosing, finger pricking, and the big one….
blood glucose target ranges. My diabetes team set what they called my “target
range” and I was expected to do all that I could to stay within those lines. Anyone
who knows me knows that I am a perfectionist and that I like things done the
right way. My first few weeks on insulin were very frustrating as my body
adjusted and as I better learned how much insulin I would require. I remember
being so upset every time I saw a “bad” number. Every number outside of the
70-180 range (my target range at the time) would make me wince and I would make
myself crazy trying to figure out what I had done wrong.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My first month or so
was spent beating myself up for every “bad” number that showed up on my
glucometer. I was slowly becoming whatever my blood sugar was and something had
to change. The more I did research and the more I began to understand the
nature of T1D, the more I realized that I cannot be as precise as my pancreas
once was. Manmade insulin does not work as well as the insulin my body is
supposed to produce and I cannot expect to have perfect numbers. There are no “bad”
numbers, there are only low and high numbers. Something else I had to learn to realize is, much of the time I did not do anything wrong to get a crazy number. <o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This new mindset has
taken so much stress out of my day to day life with T1D. I take each day as it
comes, I manage the best that I know how, I celebrate the smooth days, and
I celebrate the roller coaster days because I am strong enough to survive them.
No matter how much my doctor may nitpick my blood sugars at my visits and no
matter what comments others may make about my diabetes management, I am not
defined by what my blood sugar was/is yesterday, today, or ever. Fact of the
matter is, T1D has a mind of it's own and the best I can do is use the tools I
have to manage it as well as I know how. I am tougher than I ever thought I
could be and that means much more to me than a silly number. <o:p></o:p></div>

Type One Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune condition where the
immune system attacks the insulin producing cells of the pancreas. Insulin is a
hormone that converts glucose to energy and without it, the glucose sits in the
blood stream and builds up. Nothing I did or didn’t do could have caused or
prevented T1D and I will be insulin dependent until there is a cure. I manage
my diabetes with frequent blood glucose checks and dosing insulin via an
insulin pump which I wear 24/7. <o:p></o:p></div>

who had blogs and I was hooked, I realized all that I was journaling needed to
made into a blog. I want this blog to be a place for people with T1D to come

day, which leads to lots of trash. Test strips are tiny and do not always make it to the trash when I test, actually they NEVER make it to the trash. I always joke that if I ever go missing just follow the trail of test strips and you will find me. <o:p></o:p></div>
